Acme Fresh Market is proud to announce that Marianne Tomei has been selected as our nominee for the 2012 Women’s Network – Women’s of Achievement Award. Marianne has worked for Acme for 35 years. She started her career by stocking health & beauty products and helping out in the pharmacy at Acme No. 10 (State Rd.) as a junior in high school. It wasn’t by accident that Marianne began working for Acme – her father was the director of pharmacy operations when he retired in 1994. It was during those trips accompanying her dad to work and helping him dust shelves that she realized that she too wanted to live a life of service and help her fellow man. Currently she is the Lead Pharmacist at Acme No. 11 in Tallmadge and also an Acme Pharmacy spokesperson on the radio.

Marianne and her husband, Greg, have been married for 21 years. They have two daughters: Marisa – a freshman at the University of Toledo; studying exercise science/physical therapy, and Annie – a freshman at Archbishop Hoban High School. When Marianne is not working or watching Annie play soccer she enjoys gardening, cooking, and trying new recipes with her daughters.

She is very involved in her church, Our Lady of Victory in Tallmadge, as both a vice president of their women’s guild and a lector at Mass. She enjoys singing with their funeral choir ministry; and both she and Greg teach Baptism classes to new parents.

Acme Fresh Market is pleased to announce a fun, new and historic project. We have to say that we have our hands full with the new store construction and renovations already, but when the original State Road Acme street sign from the 1950’s appeared on a roadside architecture website that features vintage signs from around the states – - we couldn’t resist acquiring the sign and beginning its renovation.

We’ve assigned the task at hand to The Ellet Sign Company in Akron. We hope this unique, renovated sign will add a bit of nostalgia and brilliance to the storefront when it’s completed. It is believed that the sign was originally installed sometime in the 1940′s and the sign stands a whopping thirty six and a half feet tall. The sign will be lit using five hundred and seventy eight individual theater style bulbs, not including neon or backlighting effects which will make it an amazing showpiece.

What makes this sign so unique is that it captures the late 1940’s & 50’s era of modernization. The sign is from a time when the combination of electricity & metal (stainless steel) in signs showcased designs for future building materials that would eventually be considered “commonplace” in 1960’s architecture. It contains many fluorescent lights which gave way to the internally illuminated signs that are still used today.

In our minds this amazing and historic sign represents the bright hopes and the belief in a positive future that was a touchstone of the 1950’s. This is a feeling that we’d like to convey today for every person passing by the sign when it’s complete.

At this point, it is believed that the restoration should take an estimated sixteen weeks. We will know more about the timetable as the restoration process moves along.

We must admit that we are very proud to have a piece of our history now back in our possession. It is unclear at this point where this unique sign will be displayed and what exactly it will be used for. It is definitely something worth keeping an eye on so please check back here on a regular basis for updates. Acme Fresh Market has partnered with the Akron/Canton Regional Food Bank to host a food drive to help less fortunate people in our community. The drive begins today and will run through May 19^th. For every customer who purchases a $1 coupon – a gift card will be donated to the food bank (in increments of $25). They will also receive specified products when a customer purchases a $5 or $10 coupon. Details will be provided in the Acme circular on April 28^th and at all of our stores.

Keep Akron Beautiful is encouraging all area residents to get involved in the 2012 Great American Cleanup™, by participating in the 31st annual Clean Up Akron Week, April 21st-28th 2012. Keep Akron Beautiful is ending their Clean Up week by hosting “Super Saturday” at the Akron Zoo. (500 Edgewood Ave.) Come on out and see our mascot, Buck from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm.
