Jon Albrecht noticed a disturbing trend when Acme Fresh Markets starting offering draft beer at its grocery stores. Some customers would bring back their 64-ounce growlers for a refill, but they hadn’t finished all the beer from the previous batch. The reusable glass jugs proved too big for a few folks and some beer had to be dumped. “We don’t want anybody to waste beer. That’s a sin,” said Albrecht, the beer buyer for the Akron-based chain.
Wishing Well Program — Acme Fresh Market collected just under $16,000 in its 2012 program that was donated to the Humane Society of Greater Akron, Stark County Humane Society, Portage County Animal Protective League and the Parma Animal Shelter. The amount, collected when customers drop spare change into a wishing well, is a 37 percent increase over 2011.
Akron artist Don Drumm has designed a series of reusable grocery bags exclusive to Acme Fresh Market. A huge hit with customers, the first in the series sold out in about three hours. More are on the way along with a brightly colored holiday bag. Acme marked the release of the first bag with a $1,500 donation to the Akron Area Arts Alliance.
